Biogen Idec was formed in 2003 in Cambridge, Massachusetss through the merger of Biogen, Inc. (founded in 1978 in Geneva, Switzerland) and IDEC Pharmaceuticals Corporation (founded in 1985 San Francisco, California). Since the formation of Biogen Idec, the company has expanded their research centers to San Diego, CA as well. Avonex is an Interferon beta-1a protein launched by Biogen Idec in 2003. Avonex has been approved by the FDA for treatment of a first multiple sclerosis attack. Avonex is administered through injection.
Eligibility
Avonex Access Program, a patient assistance program provided by Biogen Idec, offers Avonex at $25 for a 90 day supply to those who are eligible for the program. Eligibility is based off of the following requirements:
- You must be a citizen of the United States or its Territories.
- You must be uninsured or underinsured.
- You must not be enrolled in a Medicare Part D Plan.
- You must meet an undisclosed income guideline.
- You must be diagnosed with MS
