SUMATRIPTAN SUCCINATE - INJECTION

(sue-muh-TRIP-tan SUX-in-ate)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Imitrex

Uses

This medication is used to treat attacks of migraine headaches once they occur. Relief of symptoms may be noted as early as ten minutes and usually within one hour. It is not effective in preventing migraines. This medication is not to be used for other types of headaches.

How To Use

This medication is given by injection just under the skin. It should be given as soon as possible when symptoms of a migraine appear. If the first dose does not relieve the headache, use no more of this medication for the same attack. If however, another attack occurs later, a second injection may be used if 1 hour has elapsed since the first dose. Do not use more than 2 injections in a 24 hour period. Use this medication as directed. Do not increase your dose or use this more frequently than prescribed. The auto-injector enables this medication to be self-injected. Your doctor or pharmacist can show you how to properly load the injector and administer the medication. Make sure you understand the correct technique for injection and how to properly dispose of needles, syringes and the medication. Be sure to ask any questions you may have.

Side Effects

Tingling sensations, feelings of warmth or heaviness, dizziness, flushing, drowsiness or pain or redness at the injection site may occur. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have: a heart condition, chest pain, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver problems, allergies (especially drug allergies). There have been rare reports of those with sulfa drug allergies having allergic reactions to sumatriptan. Consult your doctor or pharmacist. Because this medication may cause dizziness and drowsiness, use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness. The manufacturer does not recommend use of sumatriptan in the elderly, because they may be more sensitive to its side effects. This medication should be used only when clearly needed if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor about breast-feeding.
