SULFACETAMIDE SODIUM FOAM - TOPICAL

Uses

This medication is used to treat dandruff and other skin conditions (e.g., seborrheic dermatitis). It is also used to treat certain bacterial skin infections associated with these conditions.

How To Use

This medication is for use on the skin only. Avoid getting any of this medication in the eyes, nose, or mouth. Use twice daily for 8 to 10 days or as directed by your doctor. If you are applying the medication to the scalp, your hair should be towel-dried or dry before use. Shake the can well before use. Turn the can upside down to deliver a small amount of the medication onto your hand. Gently massage the medication with your fingers into the affected area until the foam disappears, allowing the area to air dry. Wash your hands after applying the foam. Do not wash the treated area immediately after applying the foam. You may use hair styling products after the foam has been applied. As your condition improves, your doctor may direct you to continue treatment less frequently to keep it under control (once/twice weekly or every other week). If your condition does not improve or worsens after 2 weeks, contact your doctor for further instructions. This medication is flammable. Avoid fire, flame, or smoking during use. To help you remember, use this medication at the same times each day.

Side Effects

This medication may cause irritation, stinging, or burning of the skin. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: joint pain, butterfly-shaped rash around the nose and cheeks, fever, mouth sores. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, high fever, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: any allergies (especially to sulfa drugs such as sulfamethoxazole). This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

This drug should not be used with the following medications because it can decrease the effectiveness of: preparations containing silver. If you are currently using any of these medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist before using sodium sulfacetamide. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products you may use, especially of: other skin products for your condition. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medication may be harmful if swallowed. If swallowed, you may experience symptoms such as: nausea, vomiting, and pink/red urine.

Do not share this medication with others.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not expose to heat or store at temperatures above 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
