HYALURONATE - INJECTION
(hi-uh-LYOU-ron-ate)

Uses
This medication is used to treat arthritis of the knee. It should be used only after non-drug treatment and simple medication (e.g., acetaminophen) have failed to provide relief.
How To Use
This drug is given by injection into the affected joint by your doctor once a week. Complete the full treatment course, even if you are already feeling better. Follow all instructions. You may not feel clear pain relief until after the last injection in the series.
Side Effects
Injection site pain, itching, swelling, heat or redness of the joint or headache may occur. If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Very unlikely but report promptly: fever, bruising, rapid heartbeat, sweating, fainting, chest or stomach pressure/pain, redness of the hands or feet. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies (especially drug allergies), infections and skin diseases in the area of the injection site, knee joint infections. Avoid heavy physical activity or prolonged use of the affected joint (such as jogging, tennis) within 48 hours following the injection. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all nonprescription or prescription medication you may use, especially of: skin disinfectants that contain ammonium salts. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Notes
Non-drug treatments for arthritis include avoiding activities that cause excess joint pain, MD-approved exercises and physical therapy.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, consult your doctor to establish a new dosing schedule promptly.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
