MAFENIDE ACETATE CREAM - TOPICAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Sulfamylon

Uses

This medication is used to prevent bacterial infection in burned skin.

How To Use

After cleaning the affected area, apply with a gloved hand once or twice daily, as directed. Burned skin should be covered with this medication at all times. For use on skin only. Duration of treatment depends on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not stop using this medication until told to do so by your doctor.

Side Effects

Pain or burning sensation may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Unlikely but report promptly: changes in skin appearance, blisters, bleeding, redness. Very unlikely but report promptly: fast breathing, weakness, dark urine, yellowing eyes. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies (especially to sulfites or "sulfa" drugs, such as sulfamethoxazole), lung disease/breathing trouble, kidney disease, metabolism problems (e.g., glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency). Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection of the skin (e.g., bacterial or yeast infection). This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

Notes

Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor for side effects and response to therapy.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 77 and 86 degrees F (25 to 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
