SODIUM POLYSTYRENE SULFONATE - ORAL SUSPENSION

Uses

This medication is used to treat high levels of potassium in the body (hyperkalemia).

How To Use

Shake well before each use. Take by mouth, usually 15 grams (60ml or 2 ounces) 1 to 4 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not use salt substitutes without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

Nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Unlikely but report promptly: swelling, muscle cramps, dizziness, mental or mood changes. Very unlikely but report promptly: fast/slow/irregular pulse, weakness, muscle spasm. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, swelling (edema). This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you use, especially of: calcium-, aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives, certain "water pills" (potassium sparing diuretics such as amiloride), digoxin. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Notes

Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store in tight containers at room temperature between 59 - 86 degrees F (15 - 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
