SODIUM CHLORIDE - OPHTHALMIC OINTMENT
(SO-dee-um KLOR-ide, off-THAL-mick)

Uses
This medication is used to reduce swelling of the cornea in certain eye conditions. It may also be used during eye exams.
How To Use
Apply this medication to the eye as directed. Apply eye ointment to the affected eye(s) as follows: Wash hands first. To avoid contamination, be careful not to touch the tube tip or let it touch your eye. Rolling the ointment tube in your hands for a minute will make the ointment flow easier. Tilt your head back, gaze upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ointment into the pouch by squeezing the tube gently. Close the eye and roll the eyeball in all directions to spread the medication. Try not to blink and do not rub the eye. Wipe the tip of the ointment tube with a tissue to remove excess medication before capping it. If you are using an eye drop in addition to this medication, apply the eye drops first and wait at least five minutes before applying this eye ointment. If you are using another type of eye ointment, wait at least ten minutes after using this medication before applying it.
Side Effects
Vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable for a period after applying the ointment. Use caution if driving or performing duties requiring clear vision. Burning or irritation of the eye may occur when first applied. If these symptoms continue or become worse, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop: redness/pain/ swelling in or around the eyes, vision problems, sensitivity to light, headache. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have: other eye problems, allergies. As with any medication, this should be used cautiously during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all over-the-counter or prescription medications you use, especially of: other eye medications. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.
Notes
If the condition for which this was prescribed does not improve or becomes worse after a few days, consult your doctor.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Discard this if the solution turns color, cloudy or contains particles.
