HEME IRON POLYPEPTIDE - ORAL

WARNING: This product contains iron which is a major cause of death due to poisoning in children less than 6 years of age. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children. If an overdose occurs, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately (see Overdose section).
Uses
Heme iron polypeptide is a form of iron supplement. It is used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia (low red blood cell count). Certain medical conditions may increase the risk of iron deficiency (e.g., pregnancy, certain surgery, chemotherapy, renal failure). It is typically used in people who cannot absorb or tolerate regular iron products (e.g., ferrous sulfate).
How To Use
Take this medication by mouth usually once or twice daily with or without meals or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water, unless your doctor directs you otherwise. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking this medication. The dosage depends on your medical condition and response to therapy.
Side Effects
No side effects are expected to occur. If side effects occur, notify your doctor promptly.
Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: iron metabolism disorders (hemochromatosis), any allergies (especially to meat products). This product is made from the red blood cells of steers (bovine). If you prefer not to use products made from animal sources, consult your doctor regarding other iron-containing products. This medication is safe to use during pregnancy. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: other iron- containing products (e.g., multivitamins). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: vomiting, severe stomach upset.
Notes
Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
