CALCITONIN NASAL SPRAY

Uses

This medication is used in the treatment of osteoporosis.

How To Use

This medication is for use in the nose as directed, usually one spray in one nostril each day alternating nostrils daily. Do not use this more often or continue using this for longer than prescribed. The first time the nasal spray is used the pump must be properly activated (primed). Learn the proper procedures. Consult your pharmacist and the product instruction sheet for details. Once the pump is activated, it does not have to be reactivated before each daily dose. To use the nasal spray, first gently blow your nose to clear the nasal passages. With your head upright, insert the tip of the nasal spray into a nostril. Pull the two white side holders toward the bottle to release the drug into the nose. Gently breathe in through the nostril then out through the mouth. Use the other nostril the next day. It is important to maintain an adequate diet rich in calcium and vitamin D while taking this medication. Discuss this with your health care professional.

Side Effects

Runny nose, sneezing or nasal irritation may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Back pain, muscle aches, dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, headache, fatigue and flushing have also been reported. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: flu-like symptoms, chest pain, rapid heart rate, breathing trouble, skin rash, painful or difficult urination, tingling of the hands or feet. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have any illnesses or any allergies. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Notes

Each bottle contains approximately 14 doses. Laboratory tests and nasal examinations will be done periodically while taking this medication to monitor its effects and to prevent side effects.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store the unopened bottle in the refrigerator. Once the bottle is opened and the pump is primed, this may be kept at room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F) away from heat and light for 2 weeks until it is gone. Keep out of reach of children.
