This medication is used to prevent asthma attacks. It is not effective in treating an attack once it begins. Cromolyn is also used just before exercising to minimize breathing problems and before exposure to pollutants or substances that cause allergic reactions/breathing problems.

How To Use

This solution is placed in a special nebulizer unit (breathing machine) and inhaled through a mask. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to demonstrate the proper way to use the nebulizer. This medication must be used routinely as directed to prevent asthma attacks. It is not useful in stopping an attack in progress. Do not use it more often, increase your dose or stop using this without first consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

This medication may cause nasal stuffiness, nasal itching or burning, sneezing, or stomach pain the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: coughing, wheezing. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.


Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney or liver disease, any allergies. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication. It is not known if cromolyn is excreted into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may use, especially of: other asthma drugs. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.


If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.


Cromolyn is also available as an aerosol spray and capsules, both for inhalation. Do not share this medication with others.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as remembered; do not use it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.


Store the solution at room temperature below 86 degrees F (below 30 degrees C) away from heat and direct light. Do not store in the bathroom. Discard the solution if it turns color or contains particles.
