BISACODYL - RECTAL ENEMA

Uses
Bisacodyl is a laxative. The enema is used to clear the intestine before rectal or bowel examinations.
How To Use
To use the enema, follow the instructions provided in the package. Unwrap the enema. Lie on your left side with one knee bent up to your chest. Insert the enema tip into the rectum pointing toward the navel and gently squeeze the bottle to release the medication. Try to retain the medication for as long as possible. Be sure to follow any special dietary restrictions given based on the type and timing of the procedure being done.
Side Effects
This medication may cause severe diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rectal irritation, stomach cramps, or bloating. If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: rectal bleeding, a rapid heart rate, weakness, dizziness, fainting, sweating, skin rash, unrelieved constipation. Prolonged, frequent or excessive use of enemas may lead to dependency. Liver damage has been reported with use of multiple bisacodyl enemas. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have: pre-existing heart disease, bowel disease, allergies. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before using any medication while breast-feeding.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone you know may have taken this medicine by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Notes
To maintain normal bowel habits, it is important to drink plenty of fluids (4 to 6 8 ounce glasses a day), increase your intake of fiber and roughage and exercise regularly.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light.
