Uses

Folic acid is used to treat or prevent certain anemias caused by poor diet, pregnancy or other conditions.

How To Use

Take this medication as directed. Follow dietary recommendations made by your doctor or nutritionist.

Side Effects

Folic acid usually has very few side effects. If you experience any unusual effects from taking this medicine, notify your doctor. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, especially: anemia (e.g., pernicious anemia), any drug or food allergies. This drug has proven safe for use during pregnancy when taken as directed. Folic acid is excreted into breast milk and has not been reported to cause harm to nursing infants. Consult your doctor about breast-feeding and using folic acid.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially: phenytoin, vitamin preparations. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Notes

Folic acid is found naturally in leafy green or yellow vegetables. Eat more of these foods to increase the amount of folic acid in your diet. Do not allow anyone else to take this medication.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
