AMMONIUM LACTATE 12% - TOPICAL

(uh-MOH-nee-um LACK-tate)

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Hydrolac, Lac-Hydrin

Uses

This medication is used to treat dry, itchy, or scaly skin conditions (e.g., xerosis, ichthyosis). It works by increasing the skin's natural moisture.

How To Use

Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area of skin usually twice daily; or as directed by your doctor. Rub the medication thoroughly into the skin. Avoid getting any of this medication in contact with your eyes, lips, inside the nose, or on open wounds. Using this medication on your face, recently shaved legs, or cracked skin may cause irritation. Consult your pharmacist.

Side Effects

Burning, stinging, and dryness of the skin may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: darkening of skin color, skin peeling, redness, swelling, small red dots on the skin, worsening of your current skin condition. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: sores or wounds on the skin, allergies you may have. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid sun exposure, use a sunscreen, and wear protective clothing on the areas of skin treated with this drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially of: other medicated skin products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contract your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

Notes

Do not share this medication with others.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 36 and 86 degrees F (2 to 30 degrees C).
